Day #4: Wednesday, Sept 10- Experiencing the Canyon

The Canyon deepens, walls rise thousands of feet above us as our tiny boats float down stream. The sound of my guides voices bounce off the shear walls, confining my sense of space to the sky above and the current below my boat.

The stretch is known as Marble Canyon, one of the steepest and most dramatic parts of the canyon. These early miles are largely flat water so the guides have devised a speaker system strapped to one of their backs that plays music. “Rolling Stones anyone?” My guides tell me that especially in the evening light the walls glow deep red from the oxidized iron in the rock. It is a cathedral for the sighted, as well as for Lonnie and me who experience it in a different way; the sound of rapids and wind echoing off the canyon walls. It is an environment that envelops you. 224 miles to go…
